Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right
In the fall of 2004, after listening to a sermon on praying for political leaders, God placed a burden on the heart of Matthew Barnes to begin a ministry in the Indiana Statehouse. A short time later, he founded Public Servants’ Prayer and soon was named Chaplain.
Barnes states, “I have been ministering in the Indiana Statehouse since 2004. God has opened more doors than I would have ever imagined, and it all started with God impressing on my heart to pray for leaders. I found that it is impossible to hate someone for whom you earnestly pray. I can honestly say that I love politicians! They are simply people who hurt, feel, and bleed the same as you and I. Some of them know Christ, others do not. The political arena has a vacuum of pastoral care.”
Barnes continues: “Too often, it’s easy to forget about the person behind the political decisions they make. If we take a moment to remember their humanity, it allows us to see each one as an individual, created in the image of God, who needs prayer, just like you and me. Use this simple mission statement to guide you as you pray for your politicians: I will PRAY, I will HONOR my leaders, I will SERVE my community.”
Father God, we pray for our governors and state and local officials. Grant them grace to face their unique challenges regarding secure voting measures, political unrest, financial crisis, law enforcement, racial division, and more. Please give them insight into the needs of their communities and discernment to make wise decisions as they lead their states and communities well.
Prayer Topics
- Ask the Father to watch over and protect the hearts and minds of the governors in our nation and their families.
- Pray for each governor and state legislator to depend on God for every decision, agenda, and meeting if they are believers. Draw those who are governing apart from His purposes to Him and transform them into men and women who desire God to be their Savior and Lord.
- Pray for the eleven gubernatorial elections taking place this year, asking God to give favor to those who will accomplish His purposes.
- Ask the Lord to surround each governor and legislator with competent staff who have strong integrity and wisdom.
